John Wesley Harding (1968)

Slothrop: He might be wearing the jacket from Blonde on Blonde, but this is music from a man looking to have fewer words and fewer women and things. This is the album Daniel Plainview (from There Will Be Blood) neglected to listen to and at a murderous cost. Exactly the right thing after whatever it is that happened in 1965, this album just might resurrect my stereo, if only I could find a way to play it.

I dreamed I saw St. Augustine,
Alive with fiery breath,
And I dreamed I was amongst the ones
That put him out to death.
Oh, I awoke in anger,
So alone and terrified,
I put my fingers against the glass
And bowed my head and cried.
