Babel (2006, Innaritu)

Koko: I have no idea what this movie is about. I liked it.

Ass-Headed Bottom: I think the movie is about the human race's tendency to produce two heartbreaking tragedies deferred for every one heartbreaking tragedy realized. That makes Inarritu slightly cheerier than Coetzee. Watch it and weep.

Slothrop: We're fucking it up, aren't we? This beautiful film-- to look at, to think about--takes place during humanity's era of globalization and interconnectedness: Coca Cola in Morroco, Japan's ubiquitous video phones and electronic surveillance, all the stories connecting, however tangentially. And yet, to invert Morrissey, the closer we get, the more you ignore me.  Since the tower long long ago, we've figured out ways to make different words understood. But now we really need to rethink what it means to communicate with others.
