Contempt

Slothrop: Slothrop enjoyed this movie very much. Yet ye who think they know what makes Slothrop's cinematic juices tingle will no doubt expect a post about Brigitte Bardot's bare ass, both wet and dry and plump all over. But Slothrop is a whore with discretion, and sometimes he likes a book to cover that ass and to make it learn a thing or two. Contempt, about all the institutionalizations and manipulations and half-truths of both movies and relationships, shows us how fake our lives often become without much notice. How do we learn to be so fake? Many of us learn it from the movies. But Godard has higher expectations for film than to tell us what to feel and when, and his Brechtian dissembling of cinema's conventions trusts its viewers to do some thinking for themselves. That bulge you see in Slothrop's tights? I earned it all by myself. Brigitte was just there to take the picture.
