Six Feet Under
The first two seasons were gripping and dark and tense. Seasons 3 and 4 and the first three-quarters of 5 were all cloyingly derivative and disfunctional soap-opera dramas dressed in HBO clothing. But the final episodes of season 5 were a reminder of what balls it took to make an unflinching show about Death in a culture that would saw its own nuts off to avoid confronting it. No, the characters never learn why they are stuck making the same mistakes over and over again, but whoever sees this show to the end can't help but feel their own mortality more palapbly and more immediately. It's a terribly falwed television show but one which earns that last brilliant eulogy like a motherfucker. Seasons 1 &2: B+ Seaons 3 &4 & 5: C Finale of the show A
